About Brett T

Brett T Burmeister followed a straightforward educational path into the law. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Economics from Providence College in 2003. He then attended the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Law and completed his Juris Doctor in 2006. The combination of finance, economics and legal training shaped how he approaches disputes and case strategy.

After law school he took the standard route into courtroom practice and bar admissions. He is licensed to practice in Missouri and Kansas. He is also admitted to appear before the Eighth and Tenth U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal. Those credentials have allowed him to handle matters that move from state trial courts to federal appellate dockets.

His professional memberships reflect a practice tied to litigation. He has been a member of the Missouri Association of Trial Lawyers since 2008. That association brings together lawyers who handle civil disputes and trials across the state. Since 2013 he has served on the Board of Trustees of the UMKC Law Foundation, a role that connects him back to his law school and to legal education efforts there.

Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in court. He prepares for hearings and depositions with attention to detail and keeps the courtroom record in mind when crafting arguments. He has experience handling contested matters that require both motion practice and oral advocacy. Over time he has developed familiarity with the procedures and expectations of both state and federal judges in the region.

He maintains an office in the Truman Law Building. From there he manages case files, consults with clients, and appears in state courtrooms and federal venues as needed. The location keeps him close to the local courts and to the law school where he retains ties through the UMKC Law Foundation.

Today he operates a private practice centered on litigation. He represents clients in state and federal courts in Missouri and Kansas, including appeals before the Eighth and Tenth Circuits.
