About Lois B.
Lois B. Voelz followed an unconventional path into the law. She earned a B.A. from Harvard in 1975, then returned to school a decade later and received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1987. The gap between degrees gave her time to develop a broader perspective that she later brought into her legal work.
After law school, Voelz built a practice that spans state and federal courts. She is admitted to practice in California and is admitted to the Ninth Circuit as well as several U.S. district courts in California: Northern, Central and Eastern districts. Those admissions reflect a career spent handling matters that require appearances in both trial and appellate forums.
Voelz has held the title of Senior Counsel at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. In that role she provided senior-level legal services inside a large firm environment. Her position involved advising clients and working alongside trial and transactional teams. The title also placed her in a mentorship role for younger lawyers, reviewing work and helping shape case strategy.
Colleagues describe Voelz as exacting in her preparation. She is known for careful analysis of court filings and an insistence on clarity in legal writing. Her training at Berkeley Law shows in the attentiveness she brings to legal research and in courtroom papers. She combines procedural knowledge of federal and state rules with practical judgment about how to present issues to judges and opposing counsel.
Outside the courtroom, she has participated in firm matters that require coordination across practice groups and offices. That experience helped when clients faced multi-jurisdictional problems that touched both state law and federal procedure. Her admissions to multiple federal districts have enabled her to take on assignments that cross regional lines within California.
Today Voelz continues to practice as Senior Counsel at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. She represents clients in matters brought in California state courts and in the Ninth Circuit and U.S. district courts for the Northern, Central and Eastern districts of California.
