About Matthew S.

Matthew S. Lerner earned his undergraduate degree in 1996 and his Juris Doctor from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1999. He began his legal training at a statewide level soon after finishing law school. The academic record set the stage for work in appellate and trial-oriented settings early in his career.

He joined the New York Court of Appeals as a court lawyer in 1999. That role put him inside the state’s highest court during the formative years of his practice. In 2003 he moved into private practice and became a partner at Goldberg Segalla LLP. He has remained at that firm since, taking on litigation and appellate responsibilities that draw on both his court-side experience and his later defense work.

Mr. Lerner is admitted to practice in New York and is authorized to appear before multiple federal courts in the state. His federal admissions include the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York. He has also been active in professional organizations that reflect his areas of practice. Since 2005 he has been a member of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. Beginning in 2004 he joined the Defense Research Institute and has served on the steering committees for the Young Lawyers Committee and the Appellate Advocacy Committee. Those positions have him engaged in continuing education and committee work on civil defense strategy and appellate procedure.

Colleagues describe his path as one that moved from appellate clerkship to firm partnership in a relatively short span. The transition allowed him to blend appellate insight with on-the-ground litigation. Over time his caseload has included matters that intersect with tort and insurance issues as well as appellate briefing and argument. He is a steady presence at his firm and among the professional groups that deal with insurance defense and appellate practice.

Today he is a partner at Goldberg Segalla LLP, where he handles litigation and appellate matters arising under New York law and in several federal districts. His practice concentrates on tort and insurance defense and appellate work.
