About N. Munro

N. Munro Merrick has spent decades at the intersection of civil law and dispute resolution. He studied philosophy, politics and economics at the University of Oxford and later earned a J.D. from the University of San Diego. His background blends academic study and courtroom experience.

Merrick's formal education began at the University of Oxford, where he completed work in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and received an M.A. in 1953 after studies beginning in 1949. He holds a B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University and a J.D. in Civil Law from the University of San Diego, earned in 1976. In 2009 he added a mediation certificate from North County Lifeline, Inc.

That combination of degrees shaped a career that moves between traditional litigation and alternative dispute resolution. In 1995 Merrick served as a judge pro tem on the Lawyer Mediation Panel for the Superior Court of San Diego County, North County Division. The appointment placed him in a role where he handled settlement discussions and managed mediated cases for the court.

Merrick's work reflects his civil law training and his later focus on mediation. His mediation certificate formalized skills he had used in court-appointed and private settlement settings. Colleagues and court staff who crossed paths with him in the 1990s recall a practitioner who could steer complex matters toward resolution while respecting procedural norms.

He has practiced in California for many years. Much of his experience involves civil disputes that require both legal analysis and a tempering of advocacy to achieve workable outcomes. Merrick's pathway from law school through court service and mediation training illustrates a pragmatic approach to dispute resolution rather than a single-method practice.

Today Merrick remains active in the California legal community. He continues to accept matters that draw on his experience in civil law and mediation, working on cases that benefit from a blend of courtroom knowledge and facilitated negotiation.
