About Peter
Peter Messersmith completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a B.A. in 1995. He went on to attend The John Marshall Law School, where he received his J.D. in 2002. Those years framed an early interest in administrative and federal processes and set the stage for a practice rooted in courtroom procedure and regulatory work.
Soon after law school, Messersmith established his own practice. He served as president of The Messersmith Law Office, P.C. beginning in 2002. That early step into firm leadership put him in the position of handling client intake, case strategy and courtroom filings from the outset of his career. In 2019 he took on the role of president at The Messersmith Law Office, P.A., a continuation of his practice under a different corporate form.
Messersmith’s professional associations include a decade-long membership in the American Immigration Lawyers Association from 2003 to 2013. That affiliation coincided with a period when he handled matters that touched on immigration law and related federal processes. He has worked on cases requiring interaction with administrative agencies and federal courts, drawing on the procedural training he gained in law school and early practice.
He is licensed to practice in the State of Illinois and is admitted to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Those admissions have allowed him to represent clients in both state and federal forums. His work has involved drafting pleadings, managing evidentiary records and representing clients at hearings. Colleagues describe his approach as practical; he tends to break complex procedures into clear steps for clients and for opposing counsel.
Today, Messersmith leads The Messersmith Law Office, P.A., where he continues to handle matters that require knowledge of federal procedures and administrative law. He remains involved in case management, courtroom work and the daily responsibilities of running a small firm. He currently focuses his practice on immigration-related matters and litigation in Illinois and the Northern District of Illinois.
