About Steven D.
Steven D. Heller studied English literature before turning to law. He earned a B.A. in English Literature from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1983. Five years later he completed a J.D. at Georgetown University, where he concentrated on international law and finished in 1988. The combination of a humanities background and formal study in international law shaped an early interest in cross-border legal issues and the rules that govern movement and protection.
His first notable public-sector role came in 1994, when he served in the Adjudications Office as an asylum officer with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. In that post he worked on asylum-related adjudications and administrative decision-making. Years in an adjudicative office gave him direct exposure to how claims are reviewed and evaluated in government settings.
By 2008 his career had moved into private practice and firm leadership. Records show him listed as principal of SDH US Immigration Law Ltd. in 2008, and also as an associate at Gudeon & McFadden that same year. Those entries suggest a transition period that included both firm-level management and associate-level responsibilities. He has held membership in the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) since 2008 and maintained that affiliation into the present.
More recently he is associated with Heller Immigration Law Ltd, which appears as his current office listing. The firm name is recorded for two offices. Public listings indicate he operates under that firm identity rather than a large national firm. His background—state-side adjudication experience, a Georgetown international law degree, and subsequent firm roles—gives him experience on both sides of immigration matters, inside government and in private practice.
Colleagues and official entries describe a professional path centered on immigration and asylum matters rather than other areas of law. He is admitted to practice in New York and has remained active in immigration law circles through AILA. His work history reflects sustained involvement in immigration adjudication and representation.
He currently practices immigration law at Heller Immigration Law Ltd.
